Constraint-Induced Therapy

Constraint-Induced therapy is a type of therapy that has been studied and used for years with post-stroke and TBI patients left with hemiplegia or hemiparesis. In recent years there have been studies on the use of this type of therapy for children with Cerebral Palsy and Traumatic Brain Injury that are left with hemiparesis. The results have shown dramatic and sustained improvements in motor function of the young children.

How long are the therapy sessions?

Therapy is usually 6 hours a day Monday-Friday for 4 weeks.

How is the stronger arm restrained?

The patient’s stronger arm is restrained using a bivalve cast, mitt or soft cast which is removed once a week for 15 minutes.

What is “learned non-use” of an extremity?

When a person is born or acquires an injury causing weakness of one side they learn to compensate by using the stronger side and can sometimes even neglect the weaker side all together. Because of pain, frustration or lack of coordination they may “learn” to not use it.

Through the use of Constraint-Induced Therapy function of the weaker extremity in daily tasks can increase significantly. Overall function and independence can be greatly affected and improved.
